Part One:
Recently, during a conversation that sprouted from a game of Guitar Hero II, my brother and I realized that when drumming our fingers on a table, we go in opposite directions. I start with my index finger and go towards my pinky. Joe, however, starts with his pinky and drums inward. Curious about what this habit looked like in other friends and family, I started asking around. Most of the people I asked are pinky-first finger-drummers, which left me surprised to be in the minority.
Part Two:
Today, the woman in front of me in the check-out line at Target bought, among other things, a belt. She had an employee cut off the plastic tag thing so she could put on the belt right away, and as the rest of her items were being scanned, she put on the belt. I noticed that she put the belt on starting with her front right belt loop, then pulling it around her body clockwise. This is the opposite of how I wear belts; I always start with my front left belt loop and go counterclockwise. I began wondering how other people do this mundane task of putting on belts.
Part Three:
Why do I notice? Why do I care? Um… I don’t know. But I thought I’d poll the audience anyway. Feel free to comment with your answers to the following questions, gentle readers.
- Finger drumming – index finger first or pinky first?
- Belt donning – clockwise or counterclockwise?
- Hand folding – right thumb or left thumb on top?
- Arm crossing – right arm or left arm on top?
- Purse/backpack holding – right shoulder or left shoulder?
Interesting questions.

1 – pinky
2 – counter
3 – right thumb
4 – right arm
5 – left shoulder
By the way, for right-handed people, the left shoulder is the *correct* and efficient way to carry a bag because it leaves your right arm and hand free for other business.

5. Left shoulder across body, preferably. If just on my shoulder and not across my body, right shoulder.

1. Pinky first
2. Counterclockwise
3. Right Thumb
4. Left arm
5. Right shoulder — I can’t keep it from slipping off the left side.
6. Cinch strap knot — left to right (Clark tried to “blame” this on female tendancies, but I think you’re finding this crosses gender boundaries.)

My survey responses are identical to Joe’s.
Isn’t threading your belt clockwise just incorrect? I mean, then you end up with the buckle on the right, and if your belt buckle is shaped like Texas, then Texas is upside down, and that’s just wrong. Hmm, on second thought, I think I may have had some dresses with built-in belts that had the buckle on the right-hand side. Never mind.
But really, who puts on a belt in the check-out line at Target?

1) pinky
2) clockwise, though I usually avoid belts anyway.
3) left thumb
4) right arm
5) both, equally. I think I have specific bags for specific arms.
And I would like to note that if you have a belt buckle shaped like Texas, there are greater issues at hand than the way you put on that belt.

I, for one, love such questions.

Answers for a right-handed Kate:
)
1. Finger drumming – index finger first
2. Belt donning – clockwise if the belt has notches and counterclockwise if the belt is a continuous strap you cinch – that way, my right hand always guides the remaining belt strap
3. Hand folding – left thumb on top
4. Arm crossing – left arm on top
5. Purse/backpack holding – right shoulder, even though I was recently informed (cough) that that is “incorrect”. I am currently trying to reform my ways (but not very hard, because I agree with Martha!).
