Every once in a while, someone asks me what my favorite movie is. I love movies way too much to pick just one favorite, so I usually offer to list my top five. My five are chosen using only one criterion: they must be movies that I don’t get tired of watching. Some movies, if watched too many times, kind of lose their flavor for me. (For example, I love O Brother, Where Art Thou?, but I kind of got burned out on it after seeing it again and again on DVD). All of these movies, though, I could watch forever.
One intentional aspect of my top five list is that they are all from different genres. I love musicals, but I limited myself to one. I wanted to make a top five that’s pretty representative of the type of movies that I like. This being the case, there were a lot of “close seconds” in these categories. I’ve listed some of these honorable mentions in parentheses.
So, in alphabetical order by genre, here are my top five movies:
- Action/Adventure: Back to the Future (HM: The Princess Bride)
- Comedy: The Emperor’s New Groove (HM: Galaxy Quest, Waiting for Guffman)
- Drama: The Shawshank Redemption (HM: Amadeus, Chariots of Fire)
- Musical: Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (HM: The Pirates of Penzance, West Side Story)
- Romance: Pride and Prejudice (HM: Sleepless in Seattle)
What movies are in your top five?
I am a list maker, so I know this one:
1. Tombstone
2. Braveheart
3. Moulin Rouge
4. Pirates of the Caribbean (Curse of the Black Pearl)
5. Spaceballs
I have many honorable mentions, but I’ll leave them for now!

I don’t think I could even attempt making this list, because the minute I do, it’ll be obsolete. So I will just say this: I’ve never seen The Emperor’s Groove. Apparently, it’s good?

4 out of 5 Ghormley’s agree, the Emperor’s New Groove is the best animated film out there.

But seriously, an impossible task, but I’ll give it a shot.
1. Action/Adventure – Aliens
2. Comedy – A Night at the Opera
3. Drama – …I’d like to be creative, but Shawshank is hard to beat
4. Musicals? Sure, but I’d rather Sci Fi – Dark City
5. Romance? Ugh, how about Anime (deserves a top 5 of its own, but) – Porco Rosso

I’m glad you changed the genres, Sam. It wasn’t my intention that you should try to stick with mine (though I admit that I was unclear). If your top five are all one genre, that’s fine with me.

You should know that I rented The Emperor’s New Groove on such high recommendations last night, and enjoyed it thoroughly. It was really funny, though I think it would have been funnier had I not watched it alone.
