I’ve taken on a new project at Harris Music Studio.
As of now, in the Harris music library we have lots of pieces contained in binders, books, and boxes. It’s pretty easy to get at, except you don’t know what you’ll get. If you want a specific piece of music, you’ll do a lot of searching before you find it. And even if you do locate it, it may be too easy, too hard, in the wrong key, or for the wrong instrument.
This is pretty similar to the music library problem I encountered in Auburn. The difference is that Auburn’s music library was *kind of* organized; at least there was a saved database on the computer that listed most of the songs. I ran into problems because the database was outdated and some of the information had not been entered accurately. After I spent money ordering music we already had in the library – for the second time, I decided it was time for an overhaul. I went through every single song and made sure it was entered correctly in the new and improved database. It was a lot of data entry, but the project was really satisfying.
So when Vicki approached me and said we were having music library needs at the studio, I basically said, “Yeah, I know what I’m doing. Just let me at it.” Even though some would cringe at the idea of cataloging hundreds (thousands?) of pieces, I’m eager to make the library more usable.
I am glad the world has people like you in it. I wish you well in your long and painstaking process that many would find taxing for even just two hours.

When I was the Construction Management secretary and the lone female on the 3rd floor of the Engineering building, I was dismayed at the utter haphazardness of the CM library. And since I had a chunk of the budget at my disposal, I ordered new folders, labels, boxes, filing systems … I was like Monica from Friends. And still am, in some ways. Anyway, one wall was books, one wall was videos, and the other was magazines backlogged from 1975. Sigh. It took me 2.5 semesters to finish the whole thing. I just hope your enthusiasm doesn’t lose steam before your project ends!

I know the feeling. I’m the sick kind of person who would enjoy putting all that in order just to be able to say “Oh yeah. I did that.”
