At AWANA on Wednesday nights, I’m helping with the T&T ["Truth & Training"] girls. We usually have between 5 and 10 girls in 4th-6th grade, and most of them are really really driven to learn their Bible memory verses and move forward in their books. We (the other adult and I) listen to their sections for a half hour, 7:30 to 8:00, each week. Usually, the girls have more memorized than we have time to hear.
This is incredibly cool. I’m so excited that these girls are memorizing scripture. Spending the evening with them is one of the highlights in my week.
Anyway, this past Wednesday I had about 4 girls lined up to say their verses to me.
“What time is it?” one of them asked.
I consulted my cell phone. “7:57.” I replied.
At least 4 girls let out a short scream. “Only three minutes left?” they gasped. “No! We need more time!”
I’ll be honest: the scream really surprised me. But I’m glad it represented the heart-felt “we’re sad to leave” emotion. It’s great that they want to stay and they’re not counting down the minutes until they can get out of there.
